Your transmission is easy to forget, but it’s such an essential part of any vehicle that it’s worth knowing the signs that you might need a transmission repair. To keep your Hyundai running reliably, always bring it in for regularly scheduled maintenance; but if you notice any of these signs, contact us right away. When you get a repair early, it’s always simpler and less expensive than if you wait!
How to Know If You Need Transmission Repair
1. The Engine Light Won’t Go Off
The Check Engine light can mean more than one thing, but if it’s come on and won’t go off again, your transmission could be the culprit. You’re right: that light could just be a fluke of some kind. But again, if there actually is a real issue, the longer you wait the more likely it is you’ll have a more expensive repair in the near future.
2. You Notice Stains Under Your Car
Everyone tends to panic when they see wet spots under the car, and in the summer, thankfully, most of the time that’s just condensation from the air conditioner. But if you notice the wet spot looks thicker than water, or if you notice a red or pink hue to the stain, then it’s likely transmission fluid. You might also smell it: if it’s sweet-smelling, it’s probably transmission fluid.
Get this taken care of ASAP. For one thing, a leak means your transmission will soon lack the protective fluid it needs. For another, that leak is a danger to your pets and any other animals in the area, who don’t know they shouldn’t lap up that sweet liquid.
3. You Smell Something Burning
A burning smell could be the brakes, but if that’s it, you’ll only smell it when you’ve actually been using the brakes. If you haven’t been doing that much with them and you still smell burning or see smoke, it could be that you’ve run out of transmission fluid and the engine is overheating. We can help you take care of this very quickly.
5. It’s Hard to Shift Gears
Shifting should be effortless: for you if you’re driving a stick and for the car if you’re driving an automatic. When you find that the car kind of “clunks” into gear, seemingly under protest, it means something is wrong in the gearbox. If you leave this problem to fester, you could do some very expensive and serious damage to your car. The same goes if you notice slipping gears. You should never just suddenly slip into another gear.
6. The Car Jerks or Shudders
Again, this will usually happen when you’re changing gears, but you’ll feel a shuddering, or the car will suddenly jerk forward or back. If that’s happening, have a professional take a look.
